R. Edwin Spitzmiller, DO

Neonatologist

Robert Edwin “Ed” Spitzmiller, DO, FACOP, is a board-certified neonatologist and clinical informatics enthusiast with more than two decades of experience advancing neonatal care, physician leadership and health-system technology. He started with Children’s National in July 2024 and works in the NICU at Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove and White Oak medical centers. Previously, he held senior leadership roles at Premier Health System, including associate chief medical informatics officer and NICU medical director at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio.

Dr. Spitzmiller completed his neonatal-perinatal medicine fellowship at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and earned his osteopathic medical degree from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. His interest spans neonatal intensive care, clinical workflow improvement, EHR optimization, medical informatics, Lean Six Sigma and translating clinical needs into effective technology solutions. He has also completed advanced training in medical informatics, Epic clinical informatics and artificial intelligence in health care. 

A longtime educator and physician leader, Dr. Spitzmiller has served as chair of Pediatrics at Miami Valley Hospital, medical director of a neonatal transport team and the NICU, and clinical instructor in Pediatrics and Obstetrics/Gynecology at Wright State University’s Boonshoft School of Medicine. He is a member of the Adventist HealthCare Physician Advisory Board.

Dr. Spitzmiller’s scholarly work includes publications on neonatal pulmonary disease, amplitude-integrated EEG, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy and neonatal abstinence syndrome. He is licensed in Maryland and Virginia and remains active in professional and mentoring roles within osteopathic pediatrics and clinical documentation integrity. 

Outside of the NICU, Dr Spitzmiller likes to travel, play pickleball, spend time with his wife and four daughters (when they are all home) and attend the theater.
