Kathleen Teresa Ferrer, MD

Kathleen Ferrer, MD, is an attending faculty physician in the Division of Hospital Medicine and HIV Prevention and Treatment Program in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Children’s National Hospital. She serves as the education lead for the Children’s National Global Health Initiative and the lead physician for the Occupational Health COVID-19 Response. She is also an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

As a clinician for the Children’s National HIV Prevention and Treatment Program, Dr. Ferrer cares for children with perinatally- and horizontally-acquired HIV. She previously served as the medical director of the Baylor College of Medicine Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Clinical Centre of Excellence in Lesotho, where she assisted with a scale-up of pediatric HIV care, treatment and prevention for the country.
 
She has been a critical leader in Children’s National’s COVID-19 response efforts. Through her work in the Occupational Health Department, she helped design and implement the organization’s COVID-19 testing protocols, practice and vaccination efforts for employees.
 
As the education lead for the Children’s National Global Health Initiative, Dr. Ferrer is cultivating the next generation of global health leaders and educators, while helping to build the our presence in the field of global child health. She is a Global Health faculty mentor for Children’s National residents and is co-director of the Pediatric Resident Global Child Health Pathway.

Dr. Ferrer received her undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering from Brown University and attended Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey where she earned her MD She completed her residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston. Previously, she has also worked in Chinle, Arizona, with the Indian Health Service.
